Japanese Sumi-e Ink Wash Painting
Japanese Sumi-e Ink Wash Painting (墨絵) |
Sumi-e (墨絵風) also known as suiboku-ga, is Japanese monochrome ink painting or 'ink wash painting'. These Japanese ink paintings are the embodiment of Japanese aesthetics. Using just simple black ink and carefully curated white space, sumi-e captures the timeless beauty and complexity of the natural world. Early sumi-e paintings, when paired together with calligraphy, were viewed as poetry, often being considered visual haiku (haiku is a form of poetry in Japanese literature). Sumi-e can be a therapeutic experience and the practice itself is generally relaxing, unique, and fun!
